LATIN AMERICA & THE CARIBBEAN

Headed by Marco Schneider, Arthur Bezerra and Cordel Green

The Latin American & Caribbean Chapter of ICIE is founded in the ongoing cooperation between ICIE and IBICT (Instituto Brasileiro de Informação em Ciência e Tecnologia), which is linked to the Brazilian Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation.

Marco Schneider and Arthur Bezerra are IBICT researchers since 2013. Schneider directs the research group Perfil-i (Perspectivas Filosóficas em Informação) out of IBICT in partnership with Rafael Capurro and Arthur Bezerra. Bezerra directs the research group Escritos (Estudos Críticos em Informação, Tecnologia e Organização Social), with the participation of Schneider. Both Bezerra and Schneider teach Information Ethics at the Post graduation Program in Information Science (PPGCI IBICT UFRJ) in Rio de Janeiro.

Schneider, Bezerra and their fellow IBICT researchers have directed a number of projects out of the collaboration between IBICT and ICIE, resulting in several publications, including “Dilemas ético-epistemológicos da era da informação”, a Liinc em Revista dossier, organized by Marco Schneider and Gustavo Saldanha in 2015, which brings an interview with Capurro.

In 2016, IBICT researchers Schneider, Saldanha and Lena Vania Ribeiro Pinheiro participated at length in the success of the book “Information Cultures in the Digital Age: A Festschrift in Honour of Rafael Capurro”, contributing a total of three chapters to the book.

In 2017, Bezerra, Capurro and Schneider published the original paper “Regimes of truth and power: from modern times to the digital age”, in Liinc em Revista. Also in 2017, Schneider and Bezerra translated Capurro’s article “Citizenship in the digital age” to Portuguese, which was published in the book “Comunicação, cultura, informação e democracia: tensões e contradições” (2017). The book brings together the best works presented at the V Ulepicc Meeting (Latin Union of Political Economy of Information, Communication and Culture), which took place at IBICT in 2014. Rafael Capurro was the guest lecturer and his speech was based on the referred text.

Schneider and fellow IBICT researcher Ricardo Pimenta lead as guest editors for the International Review of Information Ethics (IRIE’s) Vol.26 published in 2017, “Information Ethics from a Marxian Perspective”, which includes their own article, “Walter Benjamin’s concept of history and the plague of post-truth”.

During the pandemic in 2020, Schneider and Bezerra offered a number of online courses, about information ethics and related issues, on the PPGCI YouTube channel (link below). Bezerra and Schneider also organized, together with Escritos, an international online seminar (Seminário Internacional de Estudos Críticos em Informação, Tecnologia e Organização Social) in which Capurro participated as a lecturer.

The Encontro do International Center for Information Ethics – Capítulo América Latina e Caribe, scheduled for August 26th and 27th, is organized by Schneider and Bezerra together with Perfil-i. It is the first online meeting of the Latina America and the Caribbean chapter.

A new editon of the International Review of Information Ethics (IRIE), organized by Bezerra, Saldanha and Miguel Ángel Pérez Álvarez, from Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México, is expected by the end of 2020.
