1st Meeting of the International Center for Information Ethics – ICIE

In times when information has great economic value (allowing a large concentration of wealth in a small group of technology companies) and political value (which can interfere with state actions and even the results of elections), it is necessary to seriously discuss ethical use of information, especially when this becomes a matter of life and death, as in the context of disinformation during the Covid-19 pandemic.

It was with this conviction that the 1st Meeting of the International Center for Information Ethics (ICIE) – Latin America & Caribbean chapter took place, during the first year of the COVID19 pandemic, on August 26th and 27th, 2020, with live broadcast on YouTube . The remote event was attended by prominent information ethics researchers from different countries, such as Argentina, Uruguay, Cuba, Mexico and Brazil, as well as institutional representatives from Canada, South Africa, Jamaica and Germany.

According to the then coordinator of the Latin America and Caribbean chapter, Marco Schneider, a researcher at IBICT, “the online meeting aims not only to hold a broad debate on information ethics, but also to consolidate a network of Latin American and Caribbean cooperation in research on the subject”. The then vice representative of the chapter, Arthur Bezerra, also a researcher at IBICT, assessed that the experience of this remote meeting, in his words, “has the potential to stimulate interinstitutional actions and partnerships that discuss the ethical dimension of the new information policies that have been implemented during the pandemic.”

In addition to Schneider and Bezerra, the event featured the founder, Rafael Capurro, the then director Jared Bielby and the institutional representation of Rachel Fischer (South Africa), then deputy director, and Cordel Green (Jamaica, deputy Caribbean representative), in addition to guests and guest speakers Fidel A. Rodrígues Fernándes (University of Havana, Cuba), Felipe Chibás Ortiz (USP), Miguel Ángel Pérez Álvarez (UNAM, Mexico), Susana Finquelievich (UBA, Argentina), Maximiliano Rodriguez Fleitas (UdelaR, Uruguay), Henriette Ferreira Gomes (UFBA) and Maria Nélida González de Gómez (Ibict).
