4th meeting of the International Center for Information Ethics – ICIE
On the 9th, 10th and 11th of October 2023, the 4th Meeting of the International Center for Information Ethics (ICIE) Latin America and the Caribbean took place with the theme “Strategies to combat disinformation: the role of information and communication ethics”. The event was organized by the Faculty of Information and Communication (FIC) of the University of the Republic, the Information and Communication Ethics Group (GETINCO) and ICIE. The 1st Uruguayan Symposium on Ethics in Information and Communication will also be held during the Meeting.
The main objective of the meeting was to exchange experiences and reflections on strategies to combat disinformation and the role of information and communication ethics. The event featured the participation of experts from Germany, Argentina, Brazil, Mexico and Uruguay, who will contribute to conferences, debate tables and workshops open to the public.
According to Marco Schneider and Arthur Bezerra, researchers at Ibict and, at the time, president and vice-president of ICIE, respectively, the meeting represented the consolidation of efforts that have been made for some years to structure an agenda for the Latin American network of research and teaching in information ethics. This network, in turn, gave new impetus to the International Center for Information Ethics, created in 1999 by professor Rafael Capurro, a Uruguayan philosopher and documentalist based in Germany. The center began in Germany and established ties in different parts of the world, constituting an international network, later coordinated by colleagues from Canada and South Africa, and which today has a presidency in Brazil and coordination in Uruguay, Argentina and Mexico.
